John Cage's 4'33" — four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence
Cage's 1952 piece asks a pianist to sit at the keyboard and play nothing for four minutes and thirty-three seconds. The real sound is the audience itself: coughing, shifting, breathing. Cage's point was that there is no such thing as silence, and that any sound can be music if you choose to listen.
