LESSON 4 · Faces of Power

The Longest Selfie

Humans have been crafting self-images for centuries — from Renaissance painters at their easels to anyone with a smartphone. Each era's technology shaped what artists could reveal: mirrors showed faces, cameras captured moments, and social media created curated identities ready for instant global broadcast.

The shift from painted self-portraits to photographic ones changed the genre fundamentally. A painting required weeks of sustained self-examination. A photograph captures a fraction of a second. What was gained in speed was lost in depth.
