Where Things Sit

The symbols had a grammar, and placement was half of it. An object near the subject's right hand read as favored and good; the same object on the left carried a darker note. Items in the foreground signaled present concerns, while background details hinted at bigger ambitions or distant history. A globe behind a king's shoulder whispered world domination; the same globe in his palm declared he already held it.
