Artists painted directly over older images for thousands of years
Sacred rock shelters were used for countless generations, so new paintings were laid over old ones rather than on a fresh surface. The result is a layered timeline: archaeologists can sometimes see styles, tools, and even extinct animals from different periods stacked on the same wall.
