LESSON 4 · Art Beyond Europe

Why The Dots

The famous dots are not just a style — they began partly as a shield. Traditional sand and body designs carried sacred knowledge that uninitiated people were forbidden to see. Once those designs went onto canvas for outsiders, the artists faced a risk. So they used fields of dots to blur and hide the secret elements, while keeping the overall shape and beauty of the work intact. The result is honest to look at, yet quietly guards what should stay hidden.
