LESSON 5 · Art Beyond Europe

Bronze Age Mastery

Shang Dynasty bronze vessels, cast over three thousand years ago, rank among humanity's greatest metallurgical achievements. These ritual containers held offerings of food and wine for ancestors, and were cast using piece-mold techniques of extraordinary complexity — producing surfaces covered in intricate geometric patterns and animal motifs that simpler methods could never reproduce.

The sophistication is staggering: some vessels combine dozens of separately cast components into single objects weighing hundreds of pounds, decorated with the fierce taotie mask, a stylized animal face that stares out from countless Shang bronzes.
