Frenemies Forever

The two art forms ended up tangled together rather than at war:

  • Cross-pollination: painters used photos as references; photographers framed shots like paintings
  • New jobs: photography opened careers no painter had ever held — photojournalist, fashion shooter, documentarian
  • Shared galleries: by the 20th century, prints hung beside canvases as equals

The rivalry that was supposed to end painting just gave both sides new tools.
