Turning Wounds Into Symbols

Kahlo's real trick was translation: she took private medical facts and turned them into images anyone could read. A back brace becomes a cage. A miscarriage becomes a floating web of blood-red threads tying her to a hospital bed. A surgeon's report becomes a myth painted in oil.

Across more than thirty operations in her lifetime, the hospital was a constant. Rather than hide that, she put it on the wall — naming the suffering so plainly that strangers, decades later, still recognize their own in it.
