LESSON 4 · Sacred Art Across Cultures

Architecture of the Divine

Hindu temples are conceived as architectural representations of cosmic order — their design maps the structure of the universe onto physical space. The central tower represents Mount Meru, the cosmic axis, and concentric enclosures represent levels of reality from material to spiritual.

The sculpture covering temple exteriors follows equally precise theological prescriptions. Guardian figures protect entrances. Celestial musicians and dancers fill the intermediate levels. Gods and goddesses occupy positions matching their cosmic roles. The arrangement isn't decorative but diagrammatic — a three-dimensional theological textbook.
