With vitreous paint fired onto the surface
Color came from the glass itself, but features like faces, hands, and folds of cloth were painted on with grisaille — a dark mix of ground glass and iron oxide. Once fired in a kiln, the powdered glass melted and fused permanently to the surface, so the details could never wash or wear away.
