Destruction as Statement

Iconoclasm appears in every era because the power of images never stops threatening someone:

  • The Beeldenstorm stripped churches across the Low Countries of paintings, statues, and stained glass
  • Modern political groups destroy art as propaganda — the wreckage is the message
  • Activists target museum paintings because they know it draws instant coverage

Iconoclasm is the ultimate backhanded compliment to art. You only smash something if you believe it is dangerous. The history of image-breaking confirms what image-makers have always known: pictures are never just pictures.
