LESSON 5 · Galaxies & the Cosmic Web
The Invisible Majority
Dark matter shapes the universe despite being undetectable by any telescope:
- Fritz Zwicky identified the missing mass in the 1930s
- Vera Rubin's flat rotation curves revealed dark matter halos
- It does not interact with light or radiation of any kind
- Gravitational lensing and the Bullet Cluster are the strongest evidence
- WIMPs and axions are the top candidates, none yet detected
Without dark matter, galaxies would not have formed and the cosmic web would not exist. The universe is built on an invisible scaffold.
