Bone-Inspired Composites

Bone constantly rebuilds itself. Cells called osteoclasts chew away old or damaged bone, while osteoblasts lay down fresh bone in its place.

What decides where? Stress. Push hard on a bone often and it thickens where the force lands. Stop using it and it thins out. The skeleton is a material that quietly redesigns itself to match how you live.

Some materials borrow a trick from your blood. Vascular self-healing systems run thin channels of repair fluid right through the material, like veins under skin.

When damage cuts a channel, fluid flows straight to the wound and hardens. Because the channels refill, the same spot can heal again and again, not just once. Engineers picture future aircraft skins that quietly patch their own microcracks in flight.
