Bone Composites in Action

Bone pulls off a rare double act: strong and tough at the same time. Most materials trade one for the other — stiff things tend to be brittle.

Its secret is layering. Hard mineral crystals are packed inside soft, springy collagen fibers, and that pattern repeats at level after level, from molecules up to whole-bone shape. A crack trying to spread keeps hitting a softer layer that blunts it and stops it short.

The sea shows off the same trick. Nacre, the shiny inner layer of a shell, is mostly chalky mineral, yet it is far tougher than that mineral on its own. The mineral bricks are glued with a thin, flexible protein that keeps cracks from racing through.

Lab versions copy this brick-and-mortar layout to build ceramics that resist shattering. Nature, in other words, had a head start of millions of years.
