A leftover third eyelid
Look in the mirror at the inner corner of your eye, near your nose. That small pink fold is the **plica semilunaris**, all that remains of a third eyelid. Birds and reptiles still sweep a full **nictitating membrane** sideways across the eye to clean and protect it. In us it shrank to a tiny crease that does almost nothing.
