The Big Picture

One tension drives this whole reflex: prediction versus surprise.

  • Prediction — the cerebellum forecasts your own touch and erases it, so self-tickling does nothing.
  • Surprise — only touch your brain can't predict gets through, which is why someone else can tickle you when you can't.
