LESSON 5 · Career Small Talk

The Formality Spectrum

Cultures and workplaces differ in how formal conversation should feel. In many Japanese or Korean workplaces, formality and pauses may carry more weight. In Australia or Brazil, conversation often runs more casual and expressive. These are starting points, not stereotypes to force onto every person.

When unsure, start a little more formal and let them set the pace — it is easier to relax than to recover from being too informal. A few habits help:

  • Observe how locals interact before mirroring their style.
  • Treat yourself as a student first, a participant second.
  • Read a pause as consideration, not awkward silence.
