LESSON 5 · Career Small Talk
Safe Topics and Minefields
Generally safer openers: weather, food, travel, sports, and shared professional interests. Higher-risk topics include politics, religion, salary, and family planning — especially before you know the person and context.
In some cultures, asking about family is warmth; in others, it is intrusive. When in doubt, follow the other person's lead and mirror their topic choices before introducing your own.
When you open, ask rather than assert — "What's worth seeing while I'm here?" invites a story, while a strong opinion invites a clash. A genuine open question lets the other person reveal what is safe to talk about.
