Addiction Chemistry

Addiction rewires the brain's reward circuitry through repeated dopamine surges. Drugs like cocaine block dopamine reuptake, flooding synapses with far more dopamine than natural rewards. The brain compensates by cutting back its receptors.

This downregulation means a person needs more of the substance for the same effect (tolerance) and feels terrible without it (withdrawal). The brain has physically restructured itself, which is why addiction is a neurological condition, not a moral failure. Strong social connections can support recovery and involve oxytocin, one chemical tied to bonding and stress buffering.
