LESSON 5 · How Movies Were Born
The Blockbuster Age
Jaws (1975) invented the modern blockbuster — a film released simultaneously in hundreds of theaters with massive marketing. Before Jaws, films opened slowly, building audiences over weeks. After Jaws, the opening weekend became the measure of success.

Star Wars (1977) proved that merchandising could dwarf box office revenue. Lucas kept the merchandise rights, which studios considered worthless at the time. Over the decades, toys, games, and licensing have earned the franchise far more than its films ever did.
