LESSON 5 · How Movies Were Born
The Indie Revolution
While blockbusters dominated multiplexes, the 1990s saw an independent film explosion. The Sundance Film Festival became a launchpad, and films like Pulp Fiction proved that unconventional storytelling could generate mainstream success.
Independent cinema filled the gap that blockbuster culture created. As studios chased spectacle, indie filmmakers explored character, dialogue, and moral complexity. The result was a two-tier system: massive tentpole releases and small personal films, with almost nothing in between.
This middle-ground collapse reshaped careers. Directors who once made mid-budget dramas for studios now work in television, where streaming platforms provide budgets and creative freedom that theatrical distribution no longer offers.
