The strongest time-buying responses follow the same three-part shape, so you can reach for it under pressure without improvising:

  • Validate the question: "That's an important one."
  • Explain why it warrants care: "I want to get you accurate information, not a guess."
  • Commit to a concrete next step: "Let me look into the specifics and circle back Friday."
