LESSON 5 · The Feedback Loop

Situation, Behavior, Impact

Once a peer has agreed to hear it, structure the feedback itself. The cleanest tool is the situation-behavior-impact format: name the moment, name the action, name the result.

"In the client call (situation), when you jumped in before they finished (behavior), they seemed to shut down (impact)."

Notice what it leaves out: no judgment, no prescription. Naming the specific behavior — not the situation around it or the fallout after — is what gives the receiver something concrete they can change.
