Why Rituals Work

Pre-performance rituals reduce anxiety by giving your brain a predictable sequence in an unpredictable situation. Even arbitrary rituals — bouncing a ball three times before a free throw, counting to five before a speech — can help, because they manufacture a sense of control on demand.

The ritual itself does not need to be meaningful. What matters is consistency. When your body runs the same sequence before speaking, it begins to associate that sequence with readiness, making calm easier to reach.
