LESSON 5 · Small Talk Mastery

Most People Stay Too Long

Harvard researchers found that conversations almost never end at the moment both people would choose. Usually at least one person is quietly ready to go but stays on, unsure how to leave without seeming rude.

A well-timed exit can improve the memory of a conversation because endings matter. The peak-end rule says people remember emotional high points and endings strongly, so leave while the energy is still warm rather than waiting for it to fade.
