Vague language can be a clue in written deception: "around the office" instead of "at my desk from nine to five," or "things got complicated" instead of what happened. The blur may be deliberate, but it may also be caution, privacy, or uncertainty.

In email, look at who else is visibly on the thread. Quietly adding extra CC recipients who do not need to be there can mean the sender is building a paper trail. Ask why the message wanted witnesses before assuming deception.
