The Top Advertising Fallacies

A few patterns show up in most ads:

  • Appeal to authority — a celebrity endorses a product they know nothing about
  • Bandwagon — "millions use it" implies you should too
  • Appeal to emotion — heartwarming stories unrelated to the product's quality
  • False dilemma — "use our product or accept the inferior alternative"
  • Hasty generalization — one testimonial treated as proof for everyone
  • Appeal to nature — anything "natural" is treated as better or safer, even though many natural things are harmful and many synthetic ones are perfectly safe
