The Top Advertising Fallacies
A few patterns show up in most ads:
- Appeal to authority — a celebrity endorses a product they know nothing about
- Bandwagon — "millions use it" implies you should too
- Appeal to emotion — heartwarming stories unrelated to the product's quality
- False dilemma — "use our product or accept the inferior alternative"
- Hasty generalization — one testimonial treated as proof for everyone
- Appeal to nature — anything "natural" is treated as better or safer, even though many natural things are harmful and many synthetic ones are perfectly safe
