Catching It in the Wild

Real ads are a fast training ground. Take a slogan like "Either you buy our security system, or you leave your family unprotected." Your gut flags it instantly — and now you can name why.

This is a false dilemma: it offers two choices as if no others exist. In reality you could install a different system, add stronger locks, or get a dog. The ad hides every middle option to push one purchase.

The drill is simple. Each time an ad or headline makes you feel cornered, pause and ask: what choices are being left out? The missing options are usually where the flaw lives.
