The Diplomatic Questioning Toolkit

These phrases challenge ideas without threatening the person:

  • "Help me understand..." — frames the question as your learning, not their mistake
  • "What if we considered..." — introduces an alternative as exploration, not opposition
  • "I might be missing something, but..." — opens with humility while making your point
  • "What's the evidence behind that?" — asks without implying they have none
  • "Could we stress-test this assumption?" — positions questioning as quality control.
