Only Two Choices (Really?)

The false dichotomy presents exactly two options when more exist:

  • "You are either with us or against us" — ignoring neutrality, partial agreement, or constructive criticism
  • "Either we cut taxes or the economy collapses" — ignoring dozens of other economic tools
  • "Love it or leave it" — ignoring that improving something is a third option
  • "Either this vaccine is 100% safe or it is dangerous" — ignoring the spectrum of risk

False dichotomies work because binary choices feel decisive. They erase the messy middle ground where most real answers live.
