The Psychology of Regret
Regret is not random. It follows a few reliable rules:
- Action regret fades. A flop you tried turns into a lesson, then a story you almost enjoy telling.
- Inaction regret grows. A chance you skipped stays an open question you can never close.
- The deepest regrets are about people and risks — the call not made, the love not chased, the leap not taken.
We also misjudge the clock. Today's fear feels huge and the future feels far away, so we dodge a small discomfort now and quietly sign up for a larger ache later.
