LESSON 5 · The Extinction Crisis
Rewilding Controversies
Rewilding sounds wonderful until you are the farmer whose livestock gets eaten by reintroduced predators. The approach faces real tensions:
- Land-use conflicts — farmers and rewilders compete for the same territory
- Safety concerns — wolves and bears near settlements create genuine risk
- Baseline debates — which past do we restore to? Pre-industrial? Pleistocene?
- Invasive species — nature sometimes fills gaps with species we did not want
The best projects tackle these head-on. Compensation for livestock losses, jobs in eco-tourism, and real partnership with locals are the foundation, not optional add-ons.
