LESSON 5 · Why Countries Trade

Warfare Without Bullets

Economic sanctions are tools nations use to punish or pressure other nations without military force. They restrict trade, freeze assets, and block financial access to impose economic pain. Their reach often extends well beyond the country they target.

Sanctions range from targeted measures against specific individuals — freezing a dictator's foreign bank accounts — to comprehensive embargoes that restrict nearly all economic activity with an entire country. The severity depends on the political objective and diplomatic context.
