LESSON 5 · Your Brain on Money
The Trial Period Trick
Retailers have weaponized the endowment effect through free trials and money-back guarantees. The moment you take a product home, your brain claims ownership. Returning it now feels like a loss, even if you barely used it.
Amazon's generous return policy, Costco's no-questions-asked refunds, and every "try it free for 30 days" offer all exploit this bias. Companies know that once the item sits in your house for a week, you are far more likely to keep it regardless of how satisfied you are.
