LESSON 4 · Escape the Debt Trap

The Shame-Free Math

Bankruptcy carries a brutal stigma, but it was never meant as a punishment. It is a financial reset tool, written into the law on purpose. The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the power to create bankruptcy rules — the Founders believed people deserved a real second chance after financial ruin, instead of a lifetime chained to debts they could never repay.

Hundreds of thousands of Americans file for personal bankruptcy every year, and the typical filer is not reckless. Most filings are set off by a single bad break: a medical crisis, a job loss, or a divorce. These are life events, not character flaws. The math simply stopped working, often through no fault of the person staring at the bills.
