LESSON 5 · The Lies Maps Tell

Satellite Imagery Explained

Modern Earth observation satellites capture images across multiple wavelengths:

  • Optical satellites photograph like cameras but from orbit, limited by clouds and daylight
  • Radar satellites see through clouds, darkness, and smoke using radio waves
  • Thermal sensors detect heat signatures, useful for fire monitoring and urban heat mapping

Commercial satellite resolution has improved dramatically. In 2000, the best civilian imagery showed 1-meter details. Today, 30-centimeter resolution is available commercially. You can identify individual cars but not read license plates from space.
