LESSON 5 · The Lies Maps Tell

Real-World Impacts

GPS and satellite imagery together transformed critical fields. Precision agriculture uses GPS-guided tractors and satellite crop monitoring to apply water and fertilizer exactly where they are needed, cutting waste by up to 30%.

In humanitarian work, satellite imagery documents human rights violations. Organizations use commercial images to document mass graves, destroyed villages, and refugee movements.

This technology makes some abuses harder to deny, especially when ground access is blocked. It does not make concealment impossible, but it gives investigators a powerful independent source of evidence. Amnesty International used satellite imagery to document the destruction of Rohingya villages in Myanmar in 2017.
