LESSON 5 · History's Darkest Chapters

The Economics Were Staggering

The transatlantic slave trade and plantation slavery were central to Atlantic capitalism. Between 1500 and 1870, roughly 12.5 million Africans were forcibly transported to the Americas. By 1860, the value of enslaved people in the American South exceeded the combined value of major US economic assets such as railroads, factories, and banks. These economic forces shaped communities for generations after the formal institution ended.
