Why Poetry Survives War

War poetry does something no other form of communication can. It gives firsthand testimony that cannot be dismissed as journalism, propaganda, or academic analysis. It works as a counter to official propaganda because it carries the texture of experience rather than the abstraction of policy. And combat produces a devastation that is recognizable across cultures and eras — a Roman legionary and a drone operator share more with each other than either shares with civilians.
