LESSON 4 · Probability & Luck

Real World Applications

Bayesian reasoning powers spam filters, medical diagnosis, self-driving cars, and artificial intelligence. Every time your email filter learns from your clicks, it updates probabilities using Bayes' theorem. The same logic helps doctors combine prior knowledge with new test results to refine a diagnosis.

The broader lesson: you should update beliefs proportionally to evidence strength. Strong evidence from reliable sources should shift your views significantly. Weak evidence should shift them slightly. Never updating (stubbornness) and always updating (gullibility) are both Bayesian failures.
