Hippasus was said to have been drowned, but the story is probably myth.
Later tradition says Hippasus revealed that sqrt(2) could not be written as a ratio of whole numbers and was punished by the Pythagoreans. Historians treat the drowning story cautiously, so it works better as a legend about mathematical shock than as a confirmed murder.
