LESSON 4 · How the Music Business Works
Context Drives Virality
A catchy hook is necessary but not sufficient. Virality requires a social use case — a reason for people to create their own content using the song. Dance challenges, lip-sync trends, comedic skits, transition videos, and emotional storytelling formats all give users a template. The song becomes a tool for self-expression, not just something to listen to.

This is why music marketing has shifted from promoting the song to promoting the behavior around the song. Labels now brief TikTok influencers, seed choreography tutorials, and even adjust release strategies around platform trends.
