LESSON 5 · How the Music Business Works

Where This Is Heading

AI music is not going away. It will get cheaper, more capable, and more accessible. The real question is how the ecosystem adapts. Here are the most likely developments:

  • Licensing frameworks — similar to how sampling was legalized through clearance and royalties, AI training on copyrighted music will likely require licensing deals with rights holders
  • AI as co-writer — many artists are already using AI to brainstorm melodies, generate chord progressions, or produce demo arrangements, keeping human creative direction at the center
  • Voice protection laws — Tennessee's ELVIS Act and similar legislation are creating legal protections against unauthorized use of vocal likenesses by AI systems.
