LESSON 4 · Raise Resilient Kids
The Struggle Zone
There is a sweet spot between too easy and too hard — what psychologists call the zone of proximal development. That edge is where real learning happens, so help your child pick activities that sit right at the limit of their ability.
In practice, this means resisting the urge to swap in something easier the moment they get frustrated. Instead, ask: "Do you want a hint, or do you want to keep trying?" Offering the choice teaches them to read their own limits.
Resilient adults aren't the ones who never failed. They're the ones whose parents stood next to them during failure instead of standing between them and the difficulty.
