LESSON 5 · Discipline Without Drama

Adjusting Your Expectations

When you feel constantly frustrated with your child, ask: "Am I expecting something their brain cannot do yet?" The answer is often yes. Practical adjustments:

  • Stop expecting a toddler to wait patiently. Pack activities for waiting rooms and restaurants, since the ability to wait develops gradually and is still weak before about age five
  • Stop expecting a six-year-old to remember everything. Use visual checklists and gentle reminders without irritation
  • Stop expecting a pre-teen to manage time independently. Their frontal lobe is still under construction

Lowering expectations is not lowering standards. It is matching your approach to their capacity.
