LESSON 4 · Tantrum Survival Guide
The Art of Transition
Transitions cause more tantrums than any other daily event. Leaving the park, stopping play for dinner, turning off screens — every shift asks your child to end one state and begin another. Smooth transitions need three things:
- Advance warning: "Five more minutes, then we leave"
- Second warning: "Two more minutes — finish what you're doing"
- Bridge activity: "On the way to the car, let's count all the red things we see"
The bridge is the secret weapon. It gives the child something to move toward instead of something taken away. "We're leaving" feels like loss; "Let's race to the car" feels like adventure.
