The Safety Check

Step in when there is danger — physical, emotional, or developmental. A teen being bullied needs adult intervention. A teen about to get into a car with an impaired driver needs immediate action.

The line between discomfort and danger is not always obvious. Use this test: Could this cause lasting harm the child cannot recover from? If yes, step in. If they can recover — even through time and tears — stepping back builds resilience.
