LESSON 5 · Parenting Your Teenager

Watching Your Own Anxiety

The hardest part of stepping back is managing your own discomfort, not your child's. Parents often intervene to ease their own anxiety about their child's pain. That urge is natural, but it has to be recognized.

Ask yourself honestly: am I stepping in because my child needs help, or because I cannot stand watching them struggle? Your child can handle far more than your anxiety tells you.

So practice the pause. When the urge hits, count to ten and just watch. Often the child sorts it out in those ten seconds. If not, you can still step in — but the restraint gives them room to surprise you.
