LESSON 5 · Screens: The Modern Battle
Having the Gaming Conversation
The worst time to set gaming limits is during a conflict about gaming. The best time is a calm, planned conversation where you express curiosity rather than judgment.
Ask your child to show you what they play and why they enjoy it. Most parents have never actually watched their child's games with genuine interest. When children feel their gaming life is respected, they are dramatically more cooperative about boundaries.
Create a gaming agreement together that covers when gaming happens, what types of games are acceptable, what must be done first (homework, chores, physical activity), and what triggers a conversation about reducing time.
