The Dismissal Disguises

Dismissing usually sounds helpful, which is why it slips by. It can look like minimizing, fixing, distracting, or punishing; the child hears the same message: your feeling is a problem.

Most dismissing comes from love, not coldness. Watching your child hurt is genuinely painful, and the urge to end that pain fast is strong.
